Artist Date

So this is the first blog post I’ve ever done but I wanted to try something different when thinking about my creative process (ie. not just another Instagram post that gets lost in the algorithm).

I’ve got into journaling over the last year or two, and I’ve found it an enjoyable and useful activity, so I thought blogging could be fun.

I’ve recently read Julia Cameron’s The Artist's Way and I found it really motivating. Though I haven’t used it as a step by step course, I’ve taken some of the ideas in it and I’m trying to implement that into my own creative process. One of the things I really liked was the ‘artist date’, a solo activity that you are supposed to do once a week, that in some way benefits your creativity. It can be anything from a short walk outside to visiting a gallery for example.

So I've done a few of these recently and I’ve found it really liberating and fun.

I did one of these ‘artist dates’ today, by visiting my local art gallery and library. I’ve recently joined the library again as I want to get away from spending so much time looking at a screen and trying to read more. I’ve got an idea for a new project I want to create so I decided it would be useful to get some books to help with the research for this, rather than just relying on the internet. I just find the environment of the library or somewhere like a coffee shop really useful when I need to concentrate on an idea, as when I’m at home I often get distracted by other things around me.

So that was a really nice way to spend the afternoon and I feel pretty motivated after it, I’ll definitely carry on with more of these ‘artist dates’ or ‘solo trips’, whatever you want to call them.

Hopefully my stream of consciousness rambling makes sense!
